BACK TO BLACK !!!

Emmy Awards in September may have been an unseasonal feast of colour – awash with yellows and aquas –but the black dress never disappears from the red carpet for long. As a museum in Savannah, Georgia, USA, opens a special Little Black Dress exhibit illustrating the many incarnations of this timeless wardrobe staple from the turn of the century to the present day, we’ve also seen a rise in A-list celebrities turning back to black.

Earlier this year, both Kirsten Stewart and Charlize Theron graced the red carpet at the première of their film Snow White and the Huntsman in dramatic black dresses, seeming to foreshadow the gothic trend that’s a huge presence in autumn/winter 2012 collections. It’s been quite a year for black dresses both little and long for Charlize, who has graced numerous magazine covers and red carpets this year in black.

What she demonstrates is that it’s all in the detail when you wear black. Everyone knows black is a flattering colour, but there needs to be a little more to it if you want to avoid falling into the trap of wearing a ‘safe’ dress. Choose dresses that layer fabrics and build texture. Go for a gown with a chiffon overlay over the bust, neckline or skirt. Black comes in a million different shades, and you can create variation with texture.

If you can find black dresses with ruffle details or a cut-out neckline, this will help break up the black, providing the textural details that make an LBD look really special. Earlier this year, Katy Perry was photographed at Paris Fashion Week in a black lacy midi dress, nailing the gothic trend with its risqué neckline. She also went in for black sheer chiffon on more than one occasion this year: not an easy look to pull off and one that should be approached with caution!

To stay on trend with your LBD, make sure you get the details right. For autumn and winter, deep wine coloured nails are a must; neons and pastels tend to look a little more girly and are best kept for the summer. Add smoky eyes and nude lips, and you have all the ingredients of a dramatic, timelessly glam look...: )
